embrace your inner super star: Tips for Improving Self-Confidence

What would a more confident version of yourself look like?

Would you stand taller? Hold your head higher? Walk with a spring in your step?

Would you take bigger risks, develop more meaningful relationships, or just be more at peace, knowing that you love who you are?

Confidence can make a big difference in your life.

How can you build more confidence? We’ve got a few ideas to help you feel a little more confident—today and every day.

Positive mantras.

Bringing some positivity to your life in the form of repeatable mantras is a great way to build a little self-confidence. Write out a few “I am” statements that reflect the good qualities you see in yourself, or the good qualities you’re actively working to develop. Some examples:

“I am a loving parent.”

“I am a dedicated employee.”

“I am a really good cook.”

“I am a great listener.”

“I am enough.”

Repeating these phrases to yourself will reinforce positive beliefs and develop self-confidence. (A quick note: Try to be realistic with your mantras. No matter how many times you repeat “I am T. Swift,” it’s probably not going to happen.)

Fake it ‘til you make it.

This is a quick, classic confidence booster. If you’re not feeling great about yourself, or if you feel nervous about an upcoming event, even just faking confidence might give you the boost you need.

Doing activities as simple as striking a power pose or even smiling can help you feel immediately more confident, which could ultimately improve your performance.

Take care of yourself.

It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you feel tired, look worn out, or are too stressed or anxious to think clearly. Make sure you’re taking care of your needs, whether they’re basic (Good sleep. Healthful foods. Vitamins.) or not (Massages. Therapy. Vacation.).

If you’re tired all the time, adjust your sleep, exercise, or nutrition regimens. If you don’t like the way you look, treat yourself to a makeover or shopping spree (because dressing for success really is a thing!). If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, grab a friend and scheduled a gab sesh. Or seek out professional services.

Taking care of yourself is a great way to make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep your confidence levels high.

Set realistic goals.

Few things put a bigger damper on your confidence than failing to achieve something you set out to do. The problem is, many people set goals that are too lofty and unreachable.

As you think about the kind of person you want to be and the things you want to accomplish, make sure that your goals are realistic and viable. Be specific with your goals. And, celebrate your success! Once you see what you can achieve, you’ll feel much better about yourself.

Some people are born with natural confidence; some of us have to work at it. If you fall in the latter camp, try a few of these tips to help you feel good about yourself. Remember: you’re worth the effort!
