a quick guide for What to Buy at Your Local Farmers Market

Share:
Few things are better than a Fall morning at the farmers market. You’re surrounded by friendly people, fresh produce, local and handmade goods, and of course, food trucks. But for a farmers market newbie, it can all be a little overwhelming.

How do you make the most of your time at the market? How do you know what to buy?

We’ve rounded up a list of the very best things to buy at the farmers market. Use this guide to make your next trip a success!

Fresh, local produce.

This is kind of the obvious one, right? But there’s a reason. The farmers market gives you the perfect opportunity to support local farmers, and grab a great haul of amazing produce.

Pro Tip: You might try asking if a vendor has any discounted produce. They might give you a discount on some “less than perfect” goods. (Make sure they’re not spoiled!)

Honey.

Honey is a farmers market fav. It’s a popular sweetener, and has some killer health benefits. Look for a vendor who bottles honey themselves; some may bring it in from other communities or stores, which would negate the purpose of buying it at the market.

Eggs.

Farm-fresh eggs have surged in popularity, and farmers markets are partially to blame. The market gives people a chance to sell all those eggs from their backyard chickens. Chat with the vendor about how they raise their chickens—can’t do that at the grocery store!

Unusual fruits and veggies.

Looking for some fresh quince? What about cucamelons? Ramps?

Farmers markets probably won’t have them year-round, but when they’re in season, you’re more likely to find unusual items at a farmers market than at your store. Grab a new veggie and find a Pinterest recipe. Your taste buds will thank you.

Flowers.

If you’ve ever bought flowers from a traditional store, you know they sell them at a premium. You’ll get a better deal at your farmers market! Plus, locally grown flowers usually don’t have as many pesticides, and the lack of shipping is better for the environment. It’s a win-win!

Handmade goods.

Local vendors like to set up shop at farmers markets as a way of interacting with their community. You’ll have access to small shops that sell just about anything, from home decor, to jams or baked goods, they’re all in abundance at farmers markets. Don’t plan to leave with just your grocery list checked off!

Local eats.

Support small, local business and enjoy a delicious lunch! If there aren’t any good options, you can always head home and make a salad with all the great produce you’re buying.

A farmers market is a great way to support your local community while stocking up on some high-quality, low cost items. Treat yourself to a visit to your farmers market, and enjoy the people, the atmosphere, and the awesome finds.
