Share:
Were you the kid sitting behind a lemonade stand waiting for customers while friends rode their bikes? Then you already know running a business takes sacrifice.

If the thought of taking on experiences and super-challenging tasks are exciting and scary at the same time—you’re headed in the right direction.

To help you future boss babes and boss bros get an idea of what qualities to look for in yourself when starting a business—we’ve compiled the following list of 12 characteristics you might never even knew you had.

1. You’re willing to take risks

No one denies that starting your own business is risky. On the other hand—no risk, equals no reward. Successful business owners are willing to risk current security for a business path that might have a few—or more than a few—ups and downs.

2. You have the ability to adapt

Every day is different, and adaptation is key. As a business owner, you never know what circumstance you’ll face and you have to be able to change direction at any given moment.

3. You look for and love solving problems

If you like problem-solving, you were born to own your own business. You can go into virtually any situation and succeed by finding a solution for the problem at hand.

4. You aren’t happy sitting still

Business owners aren't happy with the status quo. They want to move. They want to change. They want to push their boundaries more than they’ve been pushed before.

5. You’re critical of yourself and others

This doesn't mean you judge. It means you are able to critique yourself and others honestly. Being able to do this means you can recognize the potential in others.

6. You admire other people who take risks

You have deep admiration for people like Arianna Huffington, Lori Greiner, Mary Barra, Sheryl Sandberg, and Diane Von Furstenberg. Women admire them for finding their niche, taking a chance, and putting themselves out there.

7. When employed by others, you think of improvements

When you’re employed by someone else, you can't help but think of ways to improve the business. Ideas for more customers, you’ve got ‘em in spades! Ways to streamline billing, you came up with that yesterday. Your wheels are always spinning and you have so many good ideas. And, you strive for the power to implement them.

8. You’re tenacious

You’re tenacious by nature. You understand 80 percent of businesses fail within the first 18 months. You know that being determined, tenacious, and somewhat stubborn is what keeps you from being in that 80 percent. You also understand how you’ve failed in the past, and you won’t be doing it that way again.

9. You’re regimented

When you run your own business, there is no one to tell you it's time to do the invoices, write the paychecks, or open the doors. Business owners have to be able to create a routine and stick with it daily, no matter the distractions.

10. You give 100 percent, all day, every day

Succeeding in business isn't easy. If it were, everyone would be a business owner. People who do well owning their own business are people who aren't afraid to work. They give 100 percent, each and every day in order to beat the odds.

11. You have a plan

If you’re the kind of person who has their life well planned, you’d make a good business owner. The most successful business owners have a long-term plan. They see the big picture in life. They’re thinking beyond next week and into the next quarter or year—using each hour to its fullest.

12. You’re competitive

You have to exude a competitive spirit in the business world in order to succeed. To be the best at something, you have to beat the best. This is true in athletics—and in business.

If you can relate to some or most of the signs listed above, you were born to run your own business. Now, the only question you have to ask yourself is—what are you waiting for?
