healthy little tummies: Gluten Free Snacks and Sugar Free Desserts Your Kids Will Be Thankful For

Share:
Parents, now your kiddos can have dessert—and snacks—and eat them too.

Eliminating refined sugar or gluten (or both!) from your family’s diet has tons of awesome health benefits. It can also mean spending hours researching sugar free recipe blogs and gluten free hashtags on social media.

And, speaking of easy sugar free desserts and gluten free snacks, here are 9 options to add to your repertoire.

Let’s get snacking—gluten free style

Baked cinnamon apple chips

Apples are packed with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Oh! And, bonus, they’re readily available in every grocery store—usually in lots of colors and types like Gala, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and more! Slice your favorite apple type into super thin slices—the thinner, the better. Lay flat on a baking sheet and sprinkle on cinnamon to taste. Bake at 200 degrees for two and a half hours (or longer for extra crunchy apples!). Turn the oven off and let the apple crisps cool in the oven to keep their crunch.

Fair warning: Your kids will probably ask for these crispy apple chips over and over again—you may want to make them in large batches.

Sweet potato crunchies

Sweet potatoes are packed with fiber, vitamin C, vitamin A, and folate. Grab a sweet potato, slice or julienne, and drizzle with one tablespoon of olive oil. Or, if your kids prefer a sweeter treat, toss the cut sweet potato in one tablespoon of unrefined coconut oil. Spread evenly on a baking sheet—no overlaps!—and bake at 375 degrees until crispy (approximately 30 minutes). These gluten free treats are super versatile—bring ‘em to the movies, make a batch for your next party, or toss a bag of them in your kid’s school lunch.

Go a little cray, cray: Mix it up by sprinkling on any of these optional herbs and spices before baking:

  • Black pepper
  • Kosher or sea salt
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice
  • Ginger
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Curry powder
  • Thyme, fresh or dried
Homemade gluten free cheez-it crackers

If your little one is a fiend for the name-brand, crunchy, cheesy crackers (and, who isn’t?), he’ll love this easy peasy homemade version. While your kids will love the mouth-watering taste, you’ll love the healthy benefits and that the ingredients were already in your pantry.

No bake gluten free granola bars

Store-bought granola bars can be packed with the processed or refined sugars and preservatives you’re trying to avoid. The good news is that you can make gluten free bars at home—the gluten free power breakfast granola bars on Yummy + Share are our favorites. Whip up a batch of these bars on the weekend—your kiddos (and probably the adults too) will have snacks for the entire week.
